Last Night Was Magical

It’s a cold winter’s evening in St Kilda, Melbourne.

The sun is setting, and I’m enamoured. Standing there, in the middle of a grassy green, in a park with nobody else around.

It’s not an idyllic instagram scene. It’s real. There’s some urban grime. But there are also palm trees silhouetting the glorious horizon — or that which I can see of it between mid rise apartments — which makes it even more special.

My skin is pale. Parched by darkness. Every ray of warm light that makes it through the chilly air is like a beam of love from the source. No matter how lost I get, that source is never far away, and just as beautiful as it has always been.

No public park would be complete without a giant fig tree.

I’m looking at it, in wonder. It sprawls like an earthly God, offering me a still, shadowy space sheltered from the bay’s breeze and before asks “will you climb?”

I will climb.

By the way, trees don’t ask like that.

They reveal the seed of desire that exists already, within us. By the time we “have an idea”, our body is already in a dance with the energetic of the space, which exists neither within “me” or “the tree”, but rather, both, spontaneously.

I find myself slowly navigating to higher heights, yet feeling more rooted than at any point during the day that just was.

I’m up high now.

High enough to be smoked if I fall, but in my warm clothes, with my headphones on cupping my ears, I feel cosy and relaxed.

And when I can’t climb any higher without unnecessary risk of death, I gaze out at the skyline again. In my near field, there are leaves and limbs, and it’s all so… tactile.

And out there in the cold blaze, dreams of an untouchable future and past — felt as an essence, not an image, nor as one moment.

When it’s time, I creep down, feeling more human, more whole, and more monkey.

Ah, how good. Just right.

And then, almost ready to depart via this one low reaching limb, I turn around for a moment to look back up at where I’ve come from. I place a palm on the tree and breathe it in.

And the words are carved right there: Jack n’ Jack

Life is here for us, always, my friend.
