Accessing Your Organic Body Tech
Accessing your body isn’t just a cute thing to get you out of pain, or move a bit better.
It’s like realising you were born in a fucking space ship that does more than you can fathom.
Wanting to resolve joint pain, play with the kids on the floor, get bendy or get jacked beyond belief are absolutely valid, sound reasons to begin.
But the path of deeply sensing your body and developing your movement will lead you further than you can imagine.
It’s taken me into realms I can only describe as mystical — because there are no words.
No machine can replicate the experience.
No computational device could possibly approach the level of revelation.
The keys really are within.
The human body does, without thought or conscious effort, what mankind’s most advanced technology can only stumble at replicating.
How exactly does it manage this?
We don’t know.
The very best in the movement world are the least sure (having often spent decades exploring techniques and teachings).
Digestion. The heart beat. Breathing…
There is only God / life’s genius to blame!
When we try to analyse it, this level of intelligence is utterly alien and evasive.
I cannot stress this enough: if you think you know the body, you’re a baby.
If you think you may be getting it, but you’re not sure? You might be nearing the doorway.
So, naturally, we trip over ourselves the more we think we know — because the more confident we become in our abstract models and concepts, the more likely we are to interfere, unskilfully.
“Once you believe you have discovered the correct way to do something your learning is finished. You will not seek further improvement. Ignorance is the prerequisite to learning, and the more comfortable we are revealing our ignorance to ourselves, the more we will learn.” — Feldenkrais
What then is the solution?
Well, there isn’t one. Not on the level of thinking. In fact, that’s the problem.
Not enough feeling.
And when we start to feel our bodies — and in the process, accept we know nothing — the knowledge paradoxically reveals itself from the inside.
While we intellectualise the body experience, we remain caterpillars.
When we attune to the felt, lived experience and drop the concept of “body”, we finally arrive in an eternal state of unfolding — and insight quietly, delicately, exquisitely soars within us — like an enchanted butterfly.
Yes, the art is this delicate.
The science is this precise.
And thoughts are too slow. Beliefs are clumsy.
Concepts are to be composted as soon as we’ve peeled their skin and sucked the nectar from them.
If you want to move well, you must sense and feel.
If you want to sense and feel, you are not sensing and feeling. You are wanting the idea of sensing and feeling.
When you’re actually feeling, there is nothing else.
This is the realm where the good shit happens. Whether we call it training, practice or life.
Whether it’s for healing, imbibing knowledge from the nerve endings, or preparing for athletic competition… the zone is the zone, and the flow is the flow, and the art is the art.
This is what gives ACCESS.
All we can ever do is create conditions favourable for access, then the learning is spontaneous. No teachers, no students. Just people creating the conditions, and people experiencing the conditions.
The conditions enable access, and deeper access enables better understanding of the conditions.
Funny… because most of us have it backwards, thinking that if we do enough busy work, with enough trying, and enough reading… we’ll arrive at the end of the rainbow.
The rainbow is inside you, right where you are.
When you water the grass you’re standing on, by placing your awareness within your body.
This is the fundamental condition required for insight.
The act of seeing inside.
Not talking about it. Not trying. Not effort.
If you’re trying to find time to be with your body, you’re still just trying to find time, not being with your body.
It’s now or it’s a lie. It’s this or it’s nothing. It’s the position you’re in, or it’s not you.
Embodiment is the way of immediacy, without urgency.
Because where else is there to be? Where else could you be — other than in your imagination!
Problems can wait until tomorrow.
Solutions are only here now.
What good is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, anyway?
Your body is the one you have constant access to — if you choose the path of insight.
Past? Not real. Future? Not real. Here and now? Words. Outside knowledge? Fake. Strong claim, I know… until tested, then it’s blindingly obvious!
Feel. Feel. Feel.
No, not feel your feelings and label them as emotions so you can therapise or optimise yourself.
Just — only — feel.
No, don’t sit with your feelings as if it’s fucking detention.
Feel in whatever circumstance you find yourself.
Not what you’re supposed to feel.
Not what’s reasonable.
Feel what is.
Don’t feel who you are.
Feel what is.
The feeling of your body is closer to who you are than anything else you believe yourself to be.
"Our self-image is a body-image, which not only determines what we think of ourselves but also what we do and how we do it." — Feldenkrais…again.
“I," you say, and are proud of this word. But greater is that in which you do not wish to believe—your body and its great reason: that does not say “I,” but does “I,” — Nietzsche, On The Despisers of the Body (A section from Thus Spoke Zarathustra)
